About Solar

The origins of solar power can be traced right back to 1839 when French scientist Edmund Becquerel first observed the photovoltaic effect. Fast forward to 2014 and solar power has come a long way.

More Homes in Kerala are now powered by the sun and this is growing by the day.

And its no wonder why – Kerala has unique natural advantage in that we get plenty of sunshine. This means we now have a real alternative to buying our power from the grid. Of course it doesn’t totally remove our reliance from the grid, but we can certainly replace a large proportion of what we need to buy from an electricity retailer.

Solar power gives households some unique opportunities:

  • The ability to power your home with an alternative to electricity generated from fossil fuels.
  • An escape from continually rising power prices.
  • The freedom to generate your own electricity on site and live the lifestyle you want.
  • A financial investment which provides a very short payback and high gains.

Why Install Solar

There are many reasons why you should choose solar power for your home or business.

Feel secure that you’re protected from rising energy prices.

Once you have a solar system installed on your roof, it will continue to generate free electricity from the sun year after year. This means you can substantially reduce or even eliminate your electricity bills and this gives you the peace of mind that you’re doing what you can to keep your bills as low as possible while still enjoying the benefits of all the gadgets that electricity powers.

Government Incentives

Now the Government of Kerala in association with Ministry of New & Renewable Energy, Government of India has come up with a novel plan – 10,000 solar homes during 2012-13. The idea is to give 60% subsidy for the system. 30% will be given by MNRE and the remaining 30% will be given by ANERT.

Significant Investment Returns

There aren’t many financial investments better than solar. You’ll be saving on your electricity bill from day one. This translates into a return on your initial investment of 15 -30% per annum for many years to come and your solar energy system will pay for itself in around 3-6 years, depending on the system size.

Do your bit for the environment

Electricity generated via your own solar system means that you’ll draw less electricity from the grid. This means less coal is burnt at power stations reducing the use of the biggest source of carbon pollution. Installing a system is the single most effective step you can take towards reducing your carbon footprint.

More evidence solar makes ecological, financial and economic sense?

How Solar Power Works

Solar power works by converting light from the sun into electricity. This electricity can then be used in your home or exported to the grid when it’s not needed. This is done by installing Solar Panels on your roof which generate DC (Direct Current) electricity. This is then fed into a solar inverter which converts the DC electricity from your solar panels into AC (Alternating Current) electricity.

With solar power you don’t need to switch it on in the morning or switch it off at night. You don’t need to switch between solar power and the grid  – the system does this all automatically so you won’t notice any change to how the appliances in your home function. In fact a solar system requires very little maintenance (as there is no moving parts) which means you’ll hardly know it’s there. This also means a good quality solar power system will last a long time.

If it seems complicated, don’t worry; one of  Penta Tec Cochin’s Solar Power Consultants will guide you through the process of how solar power works either by phone, email or via a no obligation home consultation.

Costs vs Benefits

In assessing any investment you should consider the costs versus benefits. Solar Power is no different.

There are many benefits of installing solar panels for your home’s energy consumption and significant savings can be made from day one on your electricity bills, electricity consumption and your carbon emissions.

Benefits

Here are some benefits that you and your home gain from investing in an Penta Tec Cochin Home Solar System:

  • Protection from continually rising energy prices.
  • Reduced upfront cost due to solar rebates
  • Significant financial investment returns
  • Reduction in your electricity bills
  • Doing your bit for the environment by cutting your carbon footprint
  • Increase in the value of your home

Costs

Whilst there are a number of components in a Solar Power System,  Penta Tec Cochin will provide you with an all inclusive “Out of Pocket” Price for your system.

Maximising the Benefits

What you can do to maximise the return on your investment

To reduce your payback period and increase your investment return, you can make your household an energy efficient home. Small actions and lifestyle changes can drastically reduce your electricity consumption.

There are a number of things you can do around your home:

  • Use your electricity at times when your solar system is producing electricity.
  • Turn off all appliances at the wall – turns off standby power.
  • Purchase energy efficient appliances.
  • Turn down your hot water system (heating water can be one of the main users of electricity if you use electrically boosted systems).
  • Turn off air conditioners and heaters when you are out. Use these in the rooms you are occupying.
  • Install Energy Efficient light globes – compact fluorescent globes
  • Shade East and West windows from the sun – prevents the heat gain and reduces air con use.

When designing your solar system,  Penta Tec Cochin will consider your electricity consumption patterns and tailor the system to produce electricity (where possible) to maximise the in-house utilisation of your solar production.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a solar energy system and how does it work?

Your solar system works by converting light from the sun into energy which you can use in your home or export to the grid. Panels on your roof generate DC (Direct Current) Electricity, this is fed into an inverter which converts the DC electricity into 240 volt AC (Alternating Current) Electricity which can be used in your home. See here for more information.

What does a typical home solar power system consist of?

A typical grid connected solar energy system consists of the following components:

  • Panels – The panels convert sunlight into DC electricity and then feed this electricity to the inverter.
  • Inverter – The inverter converts the electricity produced by your panels from DC electricity to AC electricity which is what your appliances use. The inverter also records the electricity produced and on some models, can communicate with your computer.
  • Energy meter – Your meter records energy generated from the solar panels
  • Mounting System – This is what connects your system to the roof.

Do I still need electricity from the grid?

  • Yes. Your solar system generates electricity during peak daylight hours. This energy is used in the day time and the balance is stored in the battery to use when there is no sun light. If the storage capacity is not enough then you have to draw power from the grid especially during cloudy days

What happens on cloudy days?

  • Your system will still produce electricity during cloudy days however production will be less than on sunny days.

If my energy requirements increase, can I upgrade the system?

  • Yes. Additional panels may be added to existing systems where a larger inverter has been installed. Where a larger system is required that is not supported by the existing inverter, an additional inverter can be installed next to the existing one or augment with a higher capacity inverter.

What can affect the amount of solar energy generated?

The amount of energy produced by the solar system depends on the following factors:

  • Panel Orientation –A system facing due east or due west will produce around 15% less than one facing due south. Penta Tec Cochin does not install systems on roofs facing north of east or west.
  • Roof Pitch –A 17 degree pitch is optimal however you will only lose around 1% production for every 5 degree deviation from this.
  • Weather – How many clear or cloudy days are experienced in your area.Around 300 days in a year can be expected in Kerala
  • System Capacity – The larger the system, the more energy will be produced.
  • Shading – Solar systems hate shade, small amounts of shade during 9am – 3pm can have a dramatic effect on production.Even 10 % shade on panel will reduce 50% out put from the panel. Shading outside of these hours in certain circumstances is acceptable however it’s best for us to complete a shade analysis if you have any doubts.
